There are things that obscure our view of the magnitude of God. The usual suspects are of course, false gods, religions, power, money, and on. We bind and rebuke, repent, fast, pray, deny, and give into-not necessarily all in that order.
But what we have let slip through the gate is comfort and pain. Pain is an idol we have neglected to address but bow down in its presence. Comfort we pursue with zeal to end the pain. We worship at the altar of comfort instead of the foot of The Cross, nailing our injuries, injustices, predispositions, and preferences to be obliterated instead of tolerated.
Special victims status is given to people in pain. We don't expect anything from them and try to provide comfort as we should. Pain is so disorienting and immobilizing that it can obscure our view of God and His Might. It can also impact our ability to hear from God. We tend to make our problems or the special victims status perks we get from them bigger than God. So we fight the pain with comfort seeking-which by the way has become a god too.
Let’s burn all of our household idols-let’s knock over and utterly destroy our idols of comfort seeking and pain stopping and return to God and His perspective!
